Whiting
Whiting | one of the best places to live in Wisconsin
Whiting, WI, is a village rich in history and natural beauty, situated between Stevens Point and Plover. It is home to the Whiting-Plover Mill, now known as Mativ and formerly Neenah Paper, which is one of the oldest paper mills on the Wisconsin River. Whiting also boasts the oldest hydroelectric power plant in the United States, operational since 1891 and owned by Consolidated Water Power.
In the mid-1880s, a grist mill was built near McDill Pond to grind grain into flour for local farmers, later transitioning to a graphite mill. The village's development has been influenced by its proximity to the Wisconsin River and Plover River, making it less developed than its neighboring areas. Despite this, its central location offers convenient access to a variety of businesses, making it a desirable place to live for those seeking work, shopping, food, or entertainment.
Local businesses in Whiting include R.D.'s Diner, Peoples State Bank, The Wellness Spa, Feltz Lumber, Designers 2, and the Worth Company. Recreational opportunities abound, particularly at McDill Pond, a 247-acre lake with a depth of 16 feet, ideal for boating, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. The pond is home to species such as panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and northern pike. A boat landing is available on the south shore off Business 51/Post Road, along with multiple shore fishing spots.
Whiting Park and Upper Whiting Park provide additional recreational spaces. Whiting Park, located below McDill Pond, features a playground, swingset, picnic tables, and a baseball field, along with birding opportunities thanks to the abundant ducks and geese. The Green Circle Trail, which winds through Whiting and along the Wisconsin River, offers some of the most scenic views along its entire route.
