Living in Amherst, WI is a delightful experience. Located in the heart of central Wisconsin, this small community offers beautiful scenery, friendly people, and a unique sense of community pride. Amherst a small metro area set in the woodlands along the Tomorrow River in between Stevens Point and Waupaca. The quaint community of family-owned shops, galleries, and restaurants is a true treasure. Many of Portage County's artists live in and around this unique community on the Tomorrow River. Amherst is known for popular attractions like Central Waters Brewing Company, Wild West Campground & Corral and Ambrosia Pub & Grill.

The Amherst Millpond is a 48-acre, hard water impoundment located in the village of Amherst. Created by a dam on the Tomorrow River, it was once used to power the local feed mill. The Tomorrow River is navigable above and below the dam, with two public access points on the east side of the pond: the boat landing and Cate Park.

The locals use the Dam to distinguish between the upper and lower section of the Tomorrow River. Fly fisherman travel here to chase wild Brown Trout and native Brook Trout. Trout over 20” can be found below the banks in this crystal clear headwater. Fall Line Outfitters Co in downtown Stevens Point is a great source for anything fly fishing related and they also offer guided fishing trips.

Amherst is known for the beautiful fairgrounds. Built in 1917, the fairgrounds host the Portage County Fair which includes 4-H & FFA, truck and tractor pulls, demolition derby, carnival rides, live music and much more! Little Britches of Wisconsin Rodeo and other events can be found here as well.

For new residents, it's good to know that Amherst is a place where you can easily feel at home. The community is welcoming, and there are many ways to get involved, whether through outdoor activities, arts and culture, or local events. Be prepared for cold winters by dressing warmly, but also enjoy the beautiful changes in scenery that each season brings.
