Stevens Point

Stevens Point | Voted one of the top 10 places to live in America

Centrally situated in Wisconsin, the Stevens Point area is a nature lover's dream. Whether you're traversing the scenic Green Circle Trail, teeing off at SentryWorld—one of the nation's top public golf courses—or paddling through the tranquil backwaters and sloughs of the Wisconsin River, adventure awaits at every turn. Known as the "Gateway to the Pineries," this nickname originated from the historical lumber trade during a time when they floated logs to market on the river. Today, the Stevens Point Flowage spans over 2,000 acres and is a recreational hotspot for boaters, fishermen, kayakers, and canoers. Multiple boat landings provide access to the water, which is teeming with various fish species such as bluegills, crappies, catfish, bass, northern pike, and muskellunge.

The area boasts numerous city and county parks that offer excellent playgrounds for children, including Pfiffner Park, Bukolt Park, and Mead Park. The Green Circle Trail, a 27-mile loop, meanders through many of these parks in Stevens Point and Whiting, offering a scenic route for hiking, running, and biking. Portions of the trail are paved, while others feature hard-packed granite or sidewalks.

Additionally, the Stevens Point Dog Park spans nearly 30 acres and is open to the public free of charge, though visitors are expected to adhere to the posted rules and regulations.

Covering over 800 square miles in Central Wisconsin, Portage County is predominantly rural, offering abundant year-round recreational opportunities and charming small communities. Stevens Point, its largest city, traces its roots back to 1858 when it was founded amidst the bustling logging industry and thriving trading posts that characterized the area's early days. The confluence of the Wisconsin River, the arrival of the railroad, and fertile soil further fueled the region's growth and prosperity.

Today, Portage County encompasses 27 municipalities and boasts a diverse population of over 70,000 residents. This vibrant community is known for its scenic landscapes, outdoor recreational activities, and a rich cultural heritage that continues to attract residents and visitors alike. The oldest farmers market in the state of Wisconsin is still operational in downtown Stevens Point. And the Stevens Point Brewery survived prohibition. This local landmark started brewing in 1857, a year before the city of Stevens Point was founded.

Approximately 8,250 students attend UW-Stevens Point. The main campus has a 280-acre nature reserve and is located in a city voted among the Best College Towns in the nation as well as one of the safest.

Stevens Point boasts great schools and low traffic, making it an ideal place to live. The specific elementary or junior high school a student attends depends on their residential area within the city. All high school seniors attend Stevens Point Area Senior High, commonly known as SPASH.
